Copy the Sequence

Watch the pattern, then rebuild it from memory.

⏱ 5–8 minutes 👀 Visual memory 👥 1 adult + 1 child

What you'll need

  • 🖥️
Or play online — no printing needed
  • 🖨️
Optional: two printed decks (colour + picture)
  • 🪑
A table with enough space for two rows of cards (print version only)

How to play

  1. Choose one deck to start with (colours are easier, pictures are a bit harder).
  2. Lay out 2 cards in a row in front of your child. Say them aloud together, left to right.
  3. Ask your child to look, then mix that pile of cards back in with the rest.
  4. Your child rebuilds the same sequence, in the same order, using their own cards from the pile.
  5. Check together against your original row (keep it hidden underneath a book until they've built theirs).
  6. If correct, add one more card and try a 3-card sequence, then 4, then 5 — go at their pace.

Two more ways to play

🔁 Reverse it

Once 4-card sequences feel easy, ask your child to rebuild the pattern backwards — a great extra challenge.

🎭 Mix the decks

Combine colours and pictures into one sequence for extra variety once your child is confident with either deck alone.

🎛️ Adjusting the difficulty

🟢
Make it easier: start at just 2 cards, leave your original row visible the whole time as a reference, or let them look for a longer time.
🔴
Make it harder: cover your row immediately, increase to 5–6 cards, or ask for it backwards.
